Male Fertility: The Lifestyle Factors Couples Often Overlook
Dr. Sanjay Shetye · 5 min read · 8/6/2026
In many consultations, only one partner has been assessed. Reproductive wellness is shared, and male factors contribute in a large share of cases — so both partners should be part of any programme.
Factors worth reviewing
- Sleep — short sleep is linked with lower testosterone and poorer recovery.
- Heat exposure — frequent saunas, very hot baths and long hours with a laptop on the lap are worth reducing.
- Smoking, tobacco and heavy alcohol — consistently associated with poorer semen parameters.
- Weight and metabolic health — insulin resistance and central weight gain affect hormonal balance.
- Nutrition — adequate protein, zinc, and antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruit.
- Chronic stress — sustained stress affects libido, sleep and hormonal rhythm.
- Movement — regular moderate exercise helps; extreme endurance training can work against you.
Testing before assumptions
A semen analysis is quick, inexpensive and the sensible first step. Repeat testing is often advised, since results vary between samples. Bring the report to your consultation rather than adjusting habits blindly.
Give changes a fair window
Sperm development takes roughly two to three months, so lifestyle changes need at least that long before a repeat test is meaningful.
Emotional wellbeing counts
Fertility journeys carry real emotional weight for men too, and it is rarely discussed. Counselling, relaxation practice and honest conversation with your partner belong in the plan.
Next step
Our fertility assessment includes questions for both partners, so our team can build a plan that involves you both from day one.
